M. Florencia Iulita, PhD

I am a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow with multidisciplinary training in pharmacology, neuroscience and cerebrovascular physiology. My scientific roots were set in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I completed a research-intensive BSc. program in molecular genetics and biotechnology. In 2009 I moved to Canada to pursue my PhD in pharmacology at McGill, under the direction of Prof. Claudio Cuello. There I have specialized on the cognitive and molecular aspects of Alzheimer’s disease and particularly, its development in Down syndrome.

During this time I became curious to understand the long, ‘silent’ phase that precedes dementia. My biggest passion became the study of vascular risk factors, and their role in affecting cerebral blood flow and other vital brain processes. This is why I joined the team of Prof. Hélène Girouard at Université de Montréal, with whom we are exploring the impact of arterial stiffness as a risk factor for dementia.

I am thrilled to join forces with the Women’s Brain Project to advocate for gender-based science and help raise awareness on the vulnerability of women to mental health issues.
